Challenge

Forma is a design biennale with no permanent home: every edition borrows a different set of buildings across the city. Visitors arrived at venues not knowing they were part of the same show, and the previous identity — a delicate line logo — vanished on scaffolding banners. The 2023 edition had six weeks, nineteen venues and one printer. Nothing could be fixed to old walls with anything stronger than tape.

02

Approach

We built the identity from three blocks of colour — blue, black and coral — that stack, split and wrap round any surface: a newspaper programme, folded leaflets, banners and door vinyls. Each venue got a block arrangement of its own, so you could recognise the biennale from the end of the street. Everything ran on one grid for the single printer.

03

Outcome

48,000 visitors came in six weeks, the biggest edition so far, and the newspaper programme ran to three reprints. Venue managers reported far fewer lost visitors asking for directions. The block system is now the biennale's permanent identity, handed over with a forty-page guide. Two venues kept their door vinyls up after the show closed, and the city tourism office now hands out the newspaper all year.
