Challenge

Halden roasts in a former tyre shop in Marvila and sells most of its coffee through forty independent grocers. Its old kraft bags were honest but invisible: on a crowded shelf they read as one brown wall, and staff had to turn them round to find the roast. The brief was blunt — make the bag sell from three metres away, keep it recyclable, and never let a new origin need a new design.

02

Approach

We stood in eleven shops with a tape measure before drawing anything. The answer was a single geometric block per roast, printed in two flat inks on a mono-material bag, with the origin set in a narrow column the roaster can rewrite by hand on a rubber stamp. A shelf strip and a 1:1 mock shelf in our studio tested every colour against its neighbours.

03

Outcome

Retail sell-through rose 38 % in the first two quarters, and the first run of the new bags sold out in nine days. Halden now launches a new origin in an afternoon: one stamp, one ink, no designer. Four grocers asked to put the shelf strip on their own coffee section. The bag system has since carried nine new origins without a single redesign.
