Challenge

The Pavilhão Cívico de Alcântara is a converted warehouse that hosts a library corner, a market, a clinic and weekend workshops under one roof. Each user had its own logo and its own signs, and visitors could not tell where one service ended and the next began. The council wanted a single identity without erasing the groups who actually run the building.

02

Approach

We drew one mark from the building's plan — a square cut into four rooms — and let each group own a colour and a quarter. That one shape became the wayfinding system: floor arrows, hanging blades, door numbers and a printed monthly programme. We prototyped the signs in cardboard on site for two weeks and moved them as people got lost.

03

Outcome

61 signs now come from one mark, made by a local metal shop from our drawings. Help-desk questions about directions dropped by more than half in the first month. The groups kept their names, gained a shared programme, and the tote bag became the pavilion's best-selling object at the Saturday market. The council has asked for the same system on two more civic buildings.

“Sixty-one signs, one mark, zero arguments. They made a public building feel like it belonged to the street.”
